"In the dim light of the apartment block stairwell, Olivia couldn’t make out just where she was. Watery afternoon light seeped through the orange glass side panels around the entry door and filled the lobby with an amber gloom. Benjamin groped for one of those push-button light switches that leaves the bulb on for a couple of minutes. He said his place was on the first floor. Grabbing her hand, he cried, “Come on!” and started up the stairs.
