“My thoughts were perfectly lucid, neatly parsed and clearly enunciated—inwardly at any rate. Though only a strange croak sounded in the hospital room. ‘Help me,’ I said to them. These words hadn’t been in my mind at all. In my mind I was giving them information, things it might be useful for them to know, such as I don’t feel any pain., There was a lot of blood, it’s in the bathroom. Have a look, see what you think. I’m having trouble moving my arms. But all I said, faintly, was ‘help me.’”

Included amongst 26 fine stories in Signs of Life Anthology, edited by writer and medical professional Sarah Sasson. Available in print, e-book and audio book.
